Cocktails for a Cause | Feb. Gilda's Club Chicago

A cocktail for a cause? We'll drink to that! Every month Tortoise Supper Club chooses a local charity to which we create a specialty cocktail on their behalf to promote throughout the month. A portion of the proceeds from every "Cocktail for a Cause" sold is donated to the charity.

Our February Cocktail for a Cause, the "Roseanne Roseannadanna", in benefit of Gilda's Club Chicago.

For the month of February, we've paired up with Gilda's Club Chicago. Gilda's Club is a place where men, women, and children whose lives have been impacted by cancer, as well as their families and friends, can feel they are part of a welcoming community of support. Their mission is to ensure that all people impacted by any type of cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

Gilda's Clubs' namesake, Gilda Radner, was one of the original cast members of “Saturday Night Live.” Throughout her time on the show, she created a number of enduring characters, including Roseanne Roseannadanna, Emily Litella and Lisa Loopner. Laughter and love were central themes of Gilda’s career and life, including in her marriage to actor and comedian Gene Wilder, the original Willy Wonka. Gilda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1985. She said that having cancer gave her membership in an elite club she’d rather not belong to. She passed away in 1989, but her legacy lived on when her husband and friends established Gilda’s Club and the first red door opened in New York City.

Stop in anytime throughout the month of February and enjoy "The Roseanne Roseannadanna", our cocktail for a cause benefiting Gilda's Club Chicago. $3 from each cocktail for a cause sold will go directly to Gilda's Club. This delicious libation is a spin on the notorious "Trinidad Sour" cocktail. The "Trinidad Sour" was created in 2009 by bartender Giuseppe Gonzalez of the Clover Bar in Brooklyn, which he based on Valentino Bolognese's Trinidad Especial, a winning cocktail at the European Angostura Cocktail Competition in 2008. Our version, "The Roseanne Roseannadanna", includes Angostura Bitters, Orgeat, almond syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and High West Rye. It has the appearance and aroma of cherries, while the flavor is fruity and dense. It's surprisingly balanced considering the amount of bitters that make up for the cocktail. The rye whiskey takes a little back seat while the spicy and almond notes come to the fore, all beautifully balanced with citrus juice. This intriguing cocktail's abundance of flavor and alluring qualities we feel is an accurate representation of the lovely Gilda Radner and her many remarkable character traits. Join us and try one of these mind blowing beverages today!
